Ghost of separate statehood

Telangana crisis has given birth to the myriad separate statehood agitations. Few people who never got the chance to represents in bigger arena are now fighting for the autonomy of their domain. Gorkhaland ,Harit pradesh ,Vidarbha are the fallouts of the P.Chitambaram's short sighted decision of carving Telangana out of the AP. In this blog I will try to enlist few points regarding the need and feasibility of seperate Vidarbha
Demand for separate Vidarbha is not new though it is not consistently pursued by Vidarbha's politicians. Every time who raised the voice for autonomy we are satisfied with ministerial post and the demand was left for a new voice. Lack of development, farmer suicides, irregular rains have deserted the Vidarbha. Gross negligence from state government is also one of the main reason behind Vidarbha’s pity state. But are west Maharashtra’s politicians solely responsible for this negligence? No surely not. Vidarbha’s politicians got the honour of Maharashtra’s CM post for 15 years out of 50.Apart from CM post Vidarbha ministers have always been there in cabinet. What did they do Vidarbha ? We got some Engineering colleges which solved their purpose too. Whenever they went to Mumbai they forgot Vidarbha. So what is the surety of the good governance in separate statehood? People will claim that CG ,Jharkhand have been benefited after getting apart from their native states. They have surely increased their GDP, but distribution of the funds were mishandled and growth was asymmetric , people like Koda making worth of more than 4k crore is an evidence to this. There are high chances of corruption and mismanagement in small states which we can see in small states like Goa where drug addiction, heinous violence are taking place every other day.
Main problem Vidarbha facing today is regarding agro sector. Vidarbha has two agriculture universities namely Akola and Nagpur. Its high time they should chip in and help the ailing sector to regain its past golden era. What Vidarbha desperately needs is second green revolution and not the ‘good for nothing’ different statehood.
Nagpur as a capital can get 2-3 IT parks but it won’t serve the main purpose of masses. Regarding industrialization, apart from Chandrapur Vidarbha lacks natural resource. We simply can’t deny the prowess of Mumbai in industrialization and the fact that it is the main reason behind the development of west Maharashtra. Saying that Nagpur will play the role of Mumbai after becoming the capital of Vidarbha is nothing but fooling ourselves. Right now we can avail excellent facilities of education at Pune, but after bifurcation we won’t be able to enjoy the same facilities and I am sure it would cost a lot to those witty students who are burning their nights to enter prestigious colleges situated in Pune,Mumbai.
Problem are many but solution is always there. By combined efforts of government (both central and state) and people, Vidhabha can establish its identity even under Mumbai’s rule, just what is needed is the will to make the difference.

“To amputate the ailing body part is not the solution, better you should change the doctor.”(Heard somewhere)

  1. nicely written... i would like to point out some facts... out of three states namely chattishgarh, jharkhand and uttarakhand only the last one has been able to show considerable progress. Also all the thrre states had considerable industrialisation and natural reserves. Also getting a separate vidarbha does not solve any problems as there is lack of industries with coal reserves being the only big support. What is really needed is the combination of politicians' and people's efforts to make vidharbha a better living place.... rather than a demand for separate state

  2. It is a clear fact that smaller states are easier to manage and run as we see for example with a small team etc. For example, People for Noida do not feel a part of UP. They feel they are a part of Delhi. The only point when they feel part of UP is when the crap UP policies might affect them and doesnt affect the rest of Delhi or viceversa.

For people in Noida to get justice they have to go to Allahabad in East UP where the high court is situated. So problems are aplenty with larger states with mismanagement being the hugest problem.

I am an advocate of smaller states. But the selfish and perverted reasons with which smaller states are being demanded in India is what scares the shit out of me. Smaller states are seen as a easy path to CM chair and political standing by many small time parties. These are the reason why smaller states should not be formed and not that they can't survive. Each state will have something to cling on and survive and mutual dependence is a part of Indian states however much we kick each others ASS!!
Oh my god..I almost wrote a small blog myself..:p

  3. the column written on the sepration on Vidarbha is surely nice.I,personally feel that being seprate wont help in progress of the vidarbha region.I think the local, state as well as the central government should concentrate on this issue..

  4. nicely put i must say. i really had to think hard to come up for this.
but gaurav your only point in the whole blog was against the politicians. i totally agree that all the politicians demanding the separate statehood aren't devotedly trying for the betterment of the region. but there are quite some actually many of the leaders whose sole objective is the development of the region. vidarbha's ministers had the CM chair for 15 years, agreed. but they were like puppets in the hand of the government. the western maharashtra leaders are much prolific, devoted and at the same time corrupt. if you say separation isn't the right alternative, then what is? the change in leadership? didn't the leadership change over the past 60 years? is every politician the same as the one preceding him? certainly not. there have been some very good leaders in here maybe few but there have been. you certainly are shutting your eyes to the step-motherly behavior of the state government towards vidarbha region.
again coming to your say about the politicians are the leaders in only vidarbha corrupt? all over the country the politicians are (in)famous for being corrupt. we can't everytime blame it on them. besides having the same politicians all over why the plight of this region only? when other parts of the state enjoy being the fastest developing cities in ASIA, why the 2nd capital of the state still remains oblivious to the development?

dude we are tired of changing the doctors, this is a kidney failure where no amount of doctor changes will help. we 'HAVE' to change it!!!
